Deqing county in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province was recently approved to build a pilot area for the innovative development of new-generation artificial intelligence (AI), according to a document issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

The county-level pilot area is the first of its kind in China, said local authorities.

The document called on Deqing to take full advantage of its existing AI industries, improve infrastructure for the pilot area, and explore new models for the high-quality development of the county's local economy.

In recent years, the county has made progress in building a good environment for the development of AI industries.

The State Council of China issued a development plan for new-generation AI in 2017, which spurred Deqing to boost integration of AI and local economy and build itself into an intelligent county with AI at its core.

In December 2018, the county made a plan to develop new-generation AI.

Under the plan, Deqing will focus on the application of new-generation AI in agricultural industries, rural management and transportation, among other areas.
