The manufacturing of dark-red enameled pottery started in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) with its originator, Gong Chun. Thus, the dark-red enameled pottery is also known as Gong Chun pottery.

The manufacturing of dark-red enameled pottery became popular in Yixing, Wuxi of Jiangsu province and Changxing county, Huzhou of Zhejiang province as the two area have rich resources of Zisha clay, the raw material of dark-red enameled pottery. The main sources of Zisha clay are in Meishan town in Changxing.
