Huzhou's Wuxing district was recently honored as a provincial model in rural road construction in East China's Zhejiang province, local media reported.

To date, the city has become the first city in the province to see all administrative areas win the honor.

By the end of 2020, the density of rural roads in the city reached 125.5 kilometers per 100 square kilometers, ranking second in Zhejiang.

The city has also built landscapes along nearly 30 percent of its rural roads.

The rural road network has bolstered the city's booming tourism sector. For example, the homestay cluster in Deqing county, the Taihu Lake Longemont Paradise in Changxing county and the Giraffe Manor in Wuxing district have benefited from this network.

In 2020, the per capita disposable income of rural residents in Huzhou reached 37,244 yuan ($5,729.85), up 7 percent from the previous year, making it one of the regions with the smallest income gap between urban and rural areas in China.

This year, the city plans to build or renovate 90 kilometers of rural roads, perform maintenance on 360 kilometers of roads and build five road service posts, said a head official from the Huzhou road and transportation management center.

In addition, it will coordinate with three other cities around the Taihu Lake - Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou – to construct roads circling the lake.
