Inner Mongolia North Heavy Industries Group, based in Baotou, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, is to develop a national key laboratory for "extreme extrusion" manufacturing technology which will explore large-scale high temperature and high strength alloys, following a recent cooperation agreement signed with AECC Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials.

The laboratory will conduct basic research on the modified forming application of large-scale high-temperature alloys, super-titanium alloys, high-strength steels and other difficult-to-deform metals, and provide basic support for the processing technology of core components in key areas.

Established in 1954, Inner Mongolia North Heavy Industries Group is one of 156 national key projects established during the first Five-Year Plan period (1953-1957).

The company is engaged in special steel smelting, extrusion, casting, forging and machinery.

The main businesses of the company include manufacturing weapons and equipment, special steel and augmented products, as well as mining trucks and engineering machinery.

Over the years, Inner Mongolia North Heavy Industries Group has carried out industry-university-research cooperation with domestic colleges and universities, including Tsinghua University.

With the country's support, a 36,000-ton vertical extrusion press was built, and the core technology of heavy-duty extrusion of large-diameter thick-walled seamless steel pipes for ultra-supercritical power plants was mastered, greatly improving China's extreme manufacturing capabilities in terms of large-scale high-temperature and high-strength alloys.
