If you don’t like resorts crowded with people but want to have a taste of the slow pace of a small town, Shaxi town in Taicang may be a good choice. Here visitors can appreciate a modern city integrated with the charm of an ancient town.

Pedestrian street in Shaxi

There is a pedestrian street in the center of Shaxi town that is often crowded during festivals or weekends. It has many stores that sell clothes, bags and ornaments, making it a top destination for young people.

Leying Garden

Shaxi has nearly all the features of an ancient town. Leying Garden is a typical garden of the Yangtze River Delta.

Old Street

Old Street in Shaxi is a must-see resort for tourists. It offers many features of an ancient town. Old Street is divided into East Street and West Street and is lined with many resorts, including the former residence of Wu Xiaobang, Wenzhi bookstore and the three bridges.

The former residence of Wu Xiaobang

The former residence of Wu Xiaobang is on the corner of East Street. Wu Xiaobing is the founder of Chinese modern dance. Visitors may have a new impression about Chinese dance after visiting Wu Xiaobang’s old home.

Wenzhi bookstore

It is hard to tell the age of this old building from its primitive appearance. The inside of the bookstore is simple but stylish. You can find works from Chinese writers from different eras as well as picture books and ancient books. It also sells postcards, which make great souvenirs.

Three bridges

There are three ancient bridges crossing the Qipu River. Standing at the center of one bridge, travelers can have a panoramic view of the antique houses along the river.

At night, visitors can relax with a cup of tea on East Street, people watching with cattail leaf fan in hand.
