chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: November 7, 2013

A self-service bicycle system opened to the public in Yonglian village of Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, on November 5. Yonglian is the first village to use such a system.

The bicycles received a warm welcome from local residents. A resident said, “I think it is convenient and good for my health.” Another said, “The locations are convenient for us to ride bicycles.”

Yonglian village spent 3 million yuan ($492,131) on the system, including 17 locations to borrow and return bicycles, 500 locks and 400 bicycles.

The system helps the village not only improve its public service system, but also advocate a green and environment-friendly lifestyle.

The self-service bicycle system in Nanfeng town will begin operation by the end of the year.
