Anti-smog products and pears popular in Taicang

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: December 13, 2013

With the rise in public awareness of the dangers of PM2.5, some anti-smog products like air purifiers are selling well. Sales of pears have also doubled on average.

Air purifiers sell well

Due to the smog, the air purifier business is doing much better than before. A staff member of an electronics chain store said that under the influence of smog, the store can sell up to 20 air purifiers per day.

Varying in price, brand and model, air purifiers are said to be able to purify indoor air. As a result, despite the high price, they are popular, sometimes even out of stock.

Nonetheless, industry insiders say that the air purifier market is mixed. One of the national testing agencies recently announced that some of the air purifiers are not completely effective in filtering PM2.5, with effectiveness ranging from 20-30 percent.

Sales of pears double

According to a fruit shop owner, average daily sales of pears have totaled over 200 kilograms recently.

However, experts suggest that pears are a cold fruit not suitable for all people.

Price for car washes stays unchanged

A number of carwashes in Taicang are busy washing cars, offering a stable price ranging from 15 yuan ($2.47) to 20 yuan ($3.29).
