Vertical planting enriches urban landscape

Taicang residents are proud of their green city. This year, the Taicang bureau of public construction has continued construction of its scenic greenbelt and transformation of its original greenbelt. Meanwhile, it has developed vertical planting programs for public buildings and facilities to decorate the whole city.

This is the first year that Taicang has gone through a large vertical planting initiative on revetments, fences, bridge masts and roofs. Jasminum and climbing rose plants have been planted on revetments along nine waterways, such as the Beicheng River and Loujiang River. Other revetments have been outfitted with planting grooves. Fences in thirteen areas, including the New District Third Primary School on Chaoyanglu Road and Experimental Middle School on Dongcanglu Road, have been decorated with climbing plants like creepers, ivies, honeysuckles and climbing roses. In addition, green plants and flowers are being grown in planting grooves on the Shuyuan bridge mast and the rails of the Yantietang passenger footbridge. Artificial turf has been laid on various roofs in Huasongyuan Garden.

As a new approach to develop urban landscaping, vertical planting not only solves problems of insufficient ground space for greening, but also enhances the landscape.
