Suzhou Port’s throughput to reach 600 million tons by 2020

Suzhou Port is the main port of China’s coastal areas and a key pivot of the integrated transportation system. It is also an important part of the Shanghai international shipping center and a key container port. The port measures 86.9 kilometers and is divided into Zhangjiagang, Changshu and Taicang port areas, as well as 14 operation areas.

Last year, the throughput of Suzhou Port reached 427 million tons. This year it will reach nearly 460 million tons. According to plans, its throughput will reach 600 million tons by 2020 and 750 million tons by 2030.

The Zhangjiagang Port area services shipping along the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the development of the port industry in Zhangjiagang. It supports the development of transportation for coal, ironstone, grain, liquid chemical products and cargo. The Zhangjiagang Port area is divided into Changshan, Zhangjiagang, a chemical industrial park, Duanshan Port, a metallurgical industrial park and Dongsha operation areas. It has 206 berths with yearly throughput capacity of 360.8 million tons and 3.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit).

The Changshu Port area serves Changshu’s economy and the development of the port industry. It puts priority on the development of transportation for coal, cargo, liquid chemical products and containers. The area consists of the Xinhua, Jinjingtang and Tiehuangsha operation areas as well as 57 berths with yearly throughput capacity of 75 million tons and 600,000 TEU.

The Taicang Port area’s services focus on Jiangsu province, Suzhou and areas along the Yangtze River. It supports the transportation of containers, ironstone and coal; interim storage and transportation of petrochemical products; and the development of the port industry in Taicang. The area consists of the Luhe, Xinjing, Dangxi, Fuqiao and Xijing operation areas. It has 163 berths with yearly throughput of 325.91 million tons and 21.47 million TEU.
