Knowing Suzhou through its gardens

Suzhou’s classical gardens are a brand of the city as well as a carrier of Chinese traditional culture. In 2014, the Suzhou municipal administrative bureau of gardens will enhance garden protection and administration.

According to the Suzhou Urban Comprehensive Plan (1996-2020), Suzhou will restore 13 gardens, including Yunfeng and Muyuan gardens. Since most of these gardens are located in residential, office and factory areas, only Chang Garden, Wufeng Garden, Qiayin Garden and Pu Garden, have been restored so far. Restoration work for Suzhou gardens still has a long way to go, said Cao Guangshu, deputy director of the Suzhou municipal administrative bureau of gardens.

In 2014, the Suzhou municipal administrative bureau of gardens will renovate the surrounding Langcang Pavilion and Ou Garden. It will explore the cultural connotations of Li’s Residence in the Humble Administrator's Garden and Sun Wu Temple on Tiger Hill. The bureau will also enrich the collections in the Suzhou garden museum and archives bureau, as well as rearrange the exhibits of Yixie Garden in Tiger Hill and the Kunqu Opera Museum in the Humble Administrator's Garden.

Next year, the Suzhou municipal administrative bureau of gardens will promote Suzhou gardens as a world brand and upgrade public awareness of heritage protection through international fairs, exhibitions and competitions. It will cooperate with scenic spots to release themed routes and link relevant attractions together to enrich the garden tour.
