Taicang charity worker receives honor

The second Jiangsu Charity Meeting was recently held in Nanjing. One-hundred entities, individuals and projects in Jiangsu province were presented with the charity award at the meeting. Seventeen of the awardees hailed from Suzhou, ranking first among all provinces.

Liu Weihua from Taicang became the only individual to obtain the title of “Excellent Charity Worker.”

Liu Weihua is the president of the Taicang Volunteer Federation and the founder of the Taicang Public Welfare Website. He set up the non-profit website in 2007, advocating for community members to work together to help the poor. Since its establishment, the website has attracted the participation of many people. The website has already had over 5,600 registered members, with the youngest only five years old and the oldest nearly 70 years old. Over 400 non-profit charity events have been successfully organized, including more than 20 charity sales for earthquake-stricken areas and seriously ill patients. More than 40 schools in disaster areas and rural areas and over 100 impoverished students have received donations. Over 10,000 recipients have received funds, and the total value of charitable donations is in the millions of yuan.

During his more than six years of volunteer service, Liu Weihua has spent over 2,000 hours volunteering. For his work, he has been awarded many honorary titles, including “Top 10 Morality Model in Taicang,” “Civilized Citizen in Suzhou,” “Good Youth in Taicang,” and a newsmaker in the first “Taicang Pride.”
