A brick carving wall was set up at the Taiping ancient architecture brick factory in Xiangcheng district, Suzhou, Jiangsu province, on January 5, 2014.

The 66-meter–tall, 2.2-meter-wide wall depicts the process of making ancient architecture bricks.

Sun Genyuan, general manager of the brick factory, explained the reason of setting up such a wall.

“The history of the old-style bricks in dark blue produced by the Taiping factory is as long as those produced by imperial kilns. However, many people have only heard of it and have little knowledge of the production process. We have to explain the procedure to every visitor, so we decided to make such a wall to help people better understand the whole process.”

After the design was finished, two carving masters were invited to the factory in June 2013. The carving work was completed at the end of last year. Xu Xuekun, one of the masters, said the wall depicts 11 people, six straw sheds, a buffalo, a wooden boat and a lotus pool with ducks. Every scene is lively and each image is vivid. In a scene, several workers are making bricks carefully and a girl is holding a cup in one hand and a bottle in the other hand to give water to the workers.

Xu said the most difficult part was carving the 11 people – old and young, men and women.

The wall’s creation focused on every detail. It is not only a record of brick production, but also an inheritance of excellent cultural heritage.
