chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: January 10, 2014

The Suzhou water authority will launch a Weekly Report on River Water Quality in Gusu Evening Post starting Jan 10, 2014, making Suzhou the first city nationwide to release water quality information. The report collects data from 28 water quality monitoring stations, covering the main urban rivers in Suzhou. It not only facilitates public understanding of the city’s water quality, but also strengthens public supervision to jointly improve water quality.

The water authority diverted high-quality water to the city’s rivers from the Xitang River and Waitang River in 2013. The water diversion project distributed high-quality water to hundreds of rivers in Suzhou, speeding up the river flow and greatly improving water quality. According to monitoring data, the diversion raised the water quality of major rivers from the Class V standard (poor quality) to the Class III standard (high quality).

The Suzhou municipal environmental protection bureau will announce the monitored figures to the public and support the water authority with water quality parameters for the adjustment and optimization program.

For rivers with poor water quality, the water authority will strive to optimize water quality by controlling the source of pollution and dispatching water resources.
