Taicang has always attached great importance to strengthening the construction of livelihood projects, including housing, education, environment and public transportation.

For housing, the city has reconstructed some old residential quarters to improve the environment, restore buildings, renovate roads and pipelines, and add more parking spaces. The reconstruction project covered an area of 117,300 square meters and benefited more than 1,500 households.

For public transportation, Taicang has added and adjusted 50 bus lines. It also added 11 special bus lines for students and four for teachers.

For road construction, the government made plans to reconstruct 53 water-logging roads, completing 47 to date. Meanwhile, the city reconstructed 287 drainage wells and added 313 new wells. After the construction, water can be drained in one hour in case of heavy rain.

Statistics show that since 2006, the city has invested 19.29 billion yuan ($3.16 billion) of fiscal expenditures on people's livelihood, accounting for 52.68 percent of public budget expenditures.

The government will continue to accelerate the construction of livelihood projects, further improving people's living standards.
