LY.com, one of China's leading online travel agencies, released a report on trips during this year’s May Day holiday. Suzhou made the list of the top 10 domestic tourist cities during the three-day holiday.

Short-distance tours to neighboring cities have become a mainstream activity. The booking number for self-guided tours soared by six times compared with the same period last year.

According to the report, the surrounding tourist attractions in major cities in East China and South China received more visitors during the May Day holiday, a growth of more than 30 percent.

The reasons for the booming short-distance tour lies in the short holiday and the popularity of private cars.

Online booking is now the dominant way to schedule travel. The report reveals that over 50 percent of visitors chose to book tickets online via cellphone.

The report also noted that tourist attractions have made great achievements in informatization and intelligence. Zhouzhuang has adopted self-service ticket machines and visitors will be able to change online tickets into paper tickets in several seconds.

In addition, figures from the report show that the demand for outbound travel increased more than 30 percent, and the number of self-guided tourists rose about 20 percent. The cruise tour is also becoming increasingly popular.
