Taicang has been focusing on improving people’s livelihood in recent years. The Liujiagang Reservoir, built in 2010, is Taicang’s largest livelihood project with the greatest investment. Construction work finished in 2012.

The project included the construction of a new dike spanning 3,750 mu (250 hectares), restoration of the old dike, reservoir dredging and some supporting projects. The reservoir, located in the northern shore of the Liuhe River, had a total investment of over 2.3 billion yuan ($373.49 million). It is a large-scale comprehensive project that can control water pollution and ensure safe drinking water.

The Liujiagang Reservoir, along with Donghai Ecological Park and Reed Marsh Wetland, has significantly improved the city’s ecological environment, highlighting Taicang’s rural scenery, green lands and leisure tourism.

Xu Zhiqiang, secretary of the CPC committee of Liuhe town and director of the administrative committee of the Yangtze River estuary holiday resort, said that they have attached great importance to the ecological environment and tourism development. In the future, they will continue to push forward the construction of the Yangtze River Estuary Forest Park, renovation of the river system and promotion of ecological water tourism in an attempt to attract more visitors.
