2014 IAAF Walking Race concludes in Taicang

The 2014 IAAF World Race Walking Cup wrapped up on May 4 in Taicang. China took the top ranking with four gold medals, five silver and one bronze, followed by Russia with four gold medals, one silver and three bronze.

On the first day, Russian athletes won the gold and silver medals both for team and singles in the men’s 50-km walking race. In the men’s 10-km race, Chinese athlete Gao Wenkui broke the race record with a score of 39 mins 40 sec, winning the gold medal. The team gold medal also went to China. In the women’s 20-km race, Russia claimed gold medals in the team and individual event, while China got silver.

During the women’s 10-km race the next day, China took two gold medals for team and individual walking. Chending, the walking champion of the London Olympic Games, ranked only 15th in the men’s 20-km race due to physical problems. The gold medal went to a Ukrainian athlete who broke the Ukrainian walking record. Cai Zelin, the silver medalist, won his first medal in an international sporting event.
