“Heritage of Beauty”, an exhibit of Huang Huanwu and Xue Yucai’s works of painting and calligraphy, opened on July 18 on the fourth floor of South Square at Suzhou Library.

There are 100 replicas of works by well-known Lingnan School painter Huang Huanwu and his wife, Xue Yucai, on display for free until July 20.

Huang Huanwu (1906-1985) was born in Xinhui, Guangdong province. He used to be a professor and academic dean at Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Huang is a representative of the Lingnan School of painting, who specialized in painting landscapes, figures, flowers, fish, and animals. In some respects, it’s Huang Huanwu who brought Lingnan School of painting to people outside Guangzhou.

Xue Yucai (1908-1993), wife of Huang Huanwu, graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. She compiled Manual of Birds and Flowers, which is comparable to the birds and flowers section of the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
