Liu Xiao Ling Tong, or Zhang Jinlai, who immortalized the role of the Monkey King in the 1982 Chinese TV series Journey to the West, recently held a public lecture in Taicang's cultural center, Jiangsu province, to share the story of Journey to the West as well as his personal experiences.

The lecture attracted some 500 guests. A girl named Hui Hui said she has watched Journey to the West many times since she was a child. Another guest, Li Shanshan, said that though the TV series has many versions, she likes the Xiao Ling Tong version most, and she was excited to see the real Monkey King.

During Zhang's speech, he shared his family's story, his experience of acting as the Monkey King and interesting moments while shooting Journey to the West. He also stressed the importance of culture and dreams, as well as the spirit of persistence.

In addition, Liu Xiao Ling Tong performed the golden cudgel (a weapon used by the Monkey King) during the speech, winning thunderous applauses from time to time. After the lecture, he signed autographs for the audience.

Journey to the West is a creative and extended interpretation of the trials and tribulations of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 – 907) monk Xuanzang during his journey (with his three disciples, including the Monkey King) to India to obtain the sacred Buddhist texts (sutras).
