A new rail link construction plan has recently been unveiled aimed at cutting the journey between Shanghai's two international airports – Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport - to as little as 35 minutes.

One of the options in consideration is an "express Metro" link, as well as a railway line between the two airports, which lie 45 kilometers apart. In the future, the route would be added to and include multiple stops, according to Sun Jianping, chief of the Shanghai Transport Commission.

Currently, the two airports can be reached by either taking Metro Line 2 all the way or splitting the journey between Line 2 and the high-speed Maglev which runs between Longyang Road station and Pudong airport. The journey currently takes 90 minutes for passengers to travel between the two airports but that journey is expected to be cut by 35 minutes once the proposed new line is put into operation.

The proposed rail link is expected to cover major stops including Shanghai South Railway Station, Longyang Road Station, Disneyland, and Shanghai East Railway Station.
