The construction of a supporting power grid project in Taicang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province, started on Nov 25.

Funded by Huaneng Taicang Power Plant, which is affiliated to China Huaneng Group Co Ltd, the 8-billion-yuan ($1.11 billion) facility will have a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts, according to authorities.

The facility, which will adopt ultra-supercritical secondary reheating technology, will play a critical role in optimizing the province's power installation structure and guaranteeing the city's power supply, said Cao Qingwei, president of Jiangsu branch of China Huaneng Group.

Founded in 1997, the power plant had generated about 200 billion kWh of power and paid taxes worth 8 billion yuan by the end of 2021.

Building the facility is part of efforts by Taicang authorities to achieve sustainable development, said a local official.
