Taicang's GDP up 6% in H1

The GDP of Taicang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province hit 82.66 billion yuan ($11.59 billion) in the first half of 2023, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent, according to local statistics authorities.

The added values of the city's primary, secondary, and tertiary industries were 926 million yuan, 36.99 billion yuan, and 44.75 billion yuan, up 7.2 percent, 4.9 percent, and 6.8 percent respectively.

The output value of Taicang's large-scale industries stood at 154.53 billion yuan over the period, an uptick of 5.6 percent year-on-year, and the four significant contributors were high-end equipment manufacturing, advanced materials, biomedicine, and aerospace enterprises.

The output value of the four industries from January to June was valued at 62.94 billion yuan, 47.02 billion yuan, 5.99 billion yuan and 4.18 billion yuan, year-on-year increases of 9.7 percent, 0.7 percent, 13 percent and 3.9 percent.

The city's investment in fixed assets achieved a year-on-year growth of 21 percent to 26.91 billion yuan over the period, its actual use of foreign capital topped $494 million, and imports and exports were worth 52.93 billion yuan.

Taicang also posted a strong recovery in consumption in the first six months of this year. The city's retail sales of social consumption goods amounted to 28.03 billion yuan, a jump of 13.7 percent year-on-year.

The Taicang Port handled 134.95 million metric tons of cargo throughput and 3.82 million TEUs of containers in the first half of this year, up 5.4 percent and 1.1 percent year-on-year.

Income levels also improved. The city's overall per capita disposable income increased by 4.7 percent to 36,119 yuan. The per capita disposable income of urban residents rose to 42,502 yuan, while the figure for rural residents was 23,397 yuan.
