Suzhou introduced the initiative this year to encourage foreign-funded and Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan enterprises to establish research institutes in the city, promoting their shift from manufacturing to innovation-driven enterprises.
TRUMPF's research institute, focusing on machine tools and laser technology, is expected to lead the growth of numerous upstream and downstream enterprises, facilitating industrial upgrades and promoting high-quality growth.
Germany's TRUMPF Group, a "hidden champion" in the global laser industry, was among the first German companies to establish a presence in Taicang. TRUMPF (China) Co has emerged as a leader in flexible sheet metal processing and industrial lasers, with operations spanning high-end intelligent manufacturing sectors such as automotive, battery, consumer electronics, medical devices, and aerospace.
In recent years, TRUMPF has been enhancing its R&D capabilities in Taicang. The company currently operates four R&D laboratories and an environmental testing facility in the city, focusing on electronics and electrical systems, optical engines, high-power signal combiners, and system integration. The company has also forged extensive collaborations with universities, enterprises, and research institutes, achieving significant progress in technological research and talent development.
In Taicang, foreign manufacturing companies are key drivers of industrial innovation and growth. By the end of September, Taicang had attracted 411 foreign enterprises above designated size. Among them, 288 have established R&D institutions, with many foreign companies partnering with local private enterprises and universities to advance technological collaboration.
