In Chengbei sub-district in Rugao, a county-level city administered by Nantong city in East China's Jiangsu province, flowers are blooming in the plastic greenhouses of Huayuanqiao community, despite the cold outside.

The community now has more than 153,000 square meters of plastic greenhouses, enabling it to plant over 60 kinds of pot plants all year round, which are mainly herbaceous flowers.

These are sold to various flower wholesale markets and landscape projects, bringing in annual sales of nearly 30 million yuan ($4.58 million) and employment for more than 80 local farmers.

According to Wang Rufeng, one of the workers employed in a greenhouse, the job has not only provided her with stable income, especially in winter which there is less traditional farming work to do, but also given her horticultural skills.

Gu Haiyan, Party secretary of the Huayuanqiao community, said it has been focusing on the ecological industry in recent years and has developed a relatively complete supply chain.
