In the construction of its town, Nanyang is focusing on building and improving its green urban system with urbanization as its core in order to build a prosperous and harmonious New Nanyang.

Over the past five years, its urbanization rate has reached 38.3 percent. The built–up area in the central city now reaches 120 square kilometers. Land use has reached 165 km2.

Yajiang industrial park, Guanzhuang industrial park and the demonstration area of urban and rural integration (which used to be known as Nanyang New District) have been put into operation. More than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) investment has been added. About 60 roads have been reconstructed and extended. 46 bridges, such as Guangwu Bridge, and Chongjing Bridge, have been built. Renovation of over 200 streets and lanes has been completed.

The construction and reconstruction of roads, bridges and dams and the improvement of streets and lanes have been finished in the central city, with the building of a regional center and ecological city as the goal. Reconstruction of urban villages are in progress. System reforms of city sanitation and city management have been accomplished successfully.

The Baihe River sightseeing district in the central city which has an area of ten thousand mu (667 km2), has been developed into a water city and a green city which are rarely seen in northern inland cities. It is a national urban wetland park approved by the National Ministry of Construction. The park has been given the title of "China's Excellent Tourism City" and "National Garden City" by relevant departments.

Each county in Nanyang is carrying out construction according to their own advantages. 11 counties have completed a batch of projects such as the construction of urban roads, cultural squares and parks. Industrial parks and belts with different characteristics have been established. Urban functions continue to be enhanced and the dwelling environment has been improved significantly.

Guanzhuang town, in Wancheng district, and Stone Buddha Temple (Shifo si) town, in Zhenping, have been awarded the Good Example of Living Environment by the Ministry of Construction. Jingziguan town, in Xichuan county is named as a famous historical and cultural town by the National Ministry of Construction and State Cultural Relics Bureau. Towns with distinctive historical and cultural characteristics and a strong economy, which are approved by governments at all levels, have been named as "Zhongzhou's Famous Towns" by the provincial construction department.
