The rural per capita net income was 8,729 ($1423.7) in 2013, a real growth of 9.6 percent over the previous year after deducting price factors. The rural per capita living expenditure was 6,119 yuan, a real growth of 9.2 percent over the previous year. The Engel coefficient of rural households was 38.1 percent. The urban per capita disposable income was 21,653 yuan, a real growth of 8.2 percent over the previous year. The per capita living expenditure of urban residents was 16,916 yuan, a real growth of 7.6 percent over the previous year. The Engel coefficient of urban households was 33.1 percent.The total population of the whole city was 11,709,000 at the end of 2013, a growth of 0.5 percent over the previous year; the permanent population was 10,090,000; the newly-born population was 125,000, a birth rate of 10.7 per thousand; the death population was 71,100, a death rate of 6.1 per thousand; the net growth population in the whole year was 53,900 persons, a natural growth rate in the population of 4.6 percent over 2012; the urbanization rate reached 38.3 percent.

By the end of 2013, the population participating into the enterprise insurance for the aged had reached 612,000, including 433,000 employees and 179,000 retired employees. The population participating into the medical insurance for urban workers had reached 782,000. The population participating into the unemployment insurance had reached 622,000, of which 14,600 persons had obtained unemployment benefits during the whole year.

The total minimum living allowance issued to urban residents throughout the whole year was 343 million yuan, covering 122,500 people. The minimum living allowance issued to the rural residents was 634 million yuan, covering 456,600 people. The urban and rural medical assistance fund issued was 126 million yuan, covering 492,000 person-times.

Various social welfare institutes in the whole city had 45,800 beds in total, and adopted 41,300 people by the end of 2013. There were 354 urban community service facilities, including 221 community service centers. A total of 400 million yuan's worth of social welfare lottery tickets were sold. A total of 769,000 yuan was received from direct donations.

There was one master degree program in the whole city. Six general institutes of higher education had recruited 31,900 students in 2013, with 88,200 students at school and 24,800 graduates. There was one adult college and 89 secondary vocational technical schools which had recruited 34,300 students, with 105,500 students at school and 48,800 graduates. There were 71 regular senior high schools recruiting 54,700 students in 2013, with 1,497 students at school and 46,600 graduates. There were 427 middle high schools recruiting 136,000 students in 2013, with 367,600 students at school and 133,100 graduates. There were 3,474 regular primary schools recruiting 238,700 students, with 1,152,300 students at school and 169,700 graduates. There were 11 special education schools recruiting 119 students in 2013, with 909 students at school. There were 411,500 children in kindergartens.

There were 16 scientific research and development organizations in the city during the whole year, covering 25,000 people engaging in scientific and technical activities and 2.42 billion yuan of expenditure on scientific and technical activities, of which the expenditure on research and test development reached 2.19 billion yuan. There were eight national enterprise technical centers, 38 provincial enterprise technical centers, 34 provincial engineering technical centers, two provincial key laboratories, 22 provincial innovation-based pilot enterprises and eight major science and technology programs. In 2013, Nanyang had gotten 16 provincial science and technology awards, applied 3,141 patents, of which 1,833 patents had been authorized, and signed 53 technical contracts, with 36 million yuan of turnover.

There were 13 product quality supervision and inspection institutions, including two provincial test centers and 11 authorized measurement institutions. There were 75 enterprises which completed product certifications. 13 products obtained the title of "National Protection of Geographical Indications", five products obtained the title of "China's Famous Brand Products", and 58 products obtained the title of "Henan's Famous Brand Products" in 2013. Relevant institutions enforced compulsory inspection on 35,800 sets of measurement instruments, formulated and revised four local standards, and established 12 measurement standards.

There was one weather radar observation station, one satellite data broadcasting receiving system, 20 regional meteorological stations, and 19 seismic stations.

There were 17 art performance troupes, 16 cultural centers, 13 public libraries, 18 museums, 20 national key cultural relics protection units, and 10 catalogues of nationally protected non-material cultural heritage, 14 broadcasting stations, covering 96.46 percent of the population, and 14 TV stations, covering 96.38 percent of the population.

There were 550 health organizations, including 315 hospitals and health centers, 13 maternal and child health hospitals (institutes and stations), 14 centers for disease control and prevention (epidemic prevention stations), and one specialized prevention and cure center (institute and station). There existed 38,800 beds in the health organizations, of which 38,500 beds were in the hospitals and health centers. There were 41,000 health technicians, including 14,600 practicing physicians and practicing physician assistants, 15,300 registered nurses, 900 health technicians in the centers for disease control and prevention (epidemic prevention stations), and 1,600 health technicians in the maternal and child health hospitals (institutes and stations). There were 218 health centers in villages and towns, with 9,500 beds and 8,000 health technicians. The New Rural Cooperative Medical Care System (NRCMCS) covered all counties and urban regions in Nanyang, covering 8,119,400 persons with a participation rate of 99.61 percent.

In 2013, Nanyang had won one national championship and 30 provincial gold medals.
