Qi Junyang, a young entrepreneur from Cixi, a county-level city in Ningbo, is revolutionizing the local waxberry industry with modern technology and a cooperative spirit.

Introducing modern packaging lines to boost the production and sales of local waxberries is a dream for Qi This year, with support from the local government, Qi has led the Qiyuan Waxberry Cooperative to establish the Yuchun Common Prosperity Workshop.

The workshop spans approximately 1,600 square meters, featuring sorting, pre-cooling, primary packaging, and secondary packaging workshops, along with three cold storage units and a testing room. This year, Qi introduced advanced equipment like sealing machines, packing machines, and palletizing robots to improve packaging efficiency and quality.

During this year's waxberry harvesting season, it packs over four tons of waxberries daily.

"We serve more than 1,000 farmers from our village and neighboring villages. Last year, the cooperative sold over 100 tons of waxberries, generating more than 6 million yuan ($826,934). With this new production line, we expect sales to reach 8 million yuan this year," Qi said.

He believes it's the responsibility of young farmers to rejuvenate traditional industries and help locals increase their income.

By introducing new technologies and building large cold storage facilities, Qi has been able to process the perishable waxberries into products like waxberry juice and waxberry snacks, sold through e-commerce platforms. Last year, the sales of waxberry juice alone brought the cooperative an additional 1 million yuan.

According to Qi, this year, he plans to develop waxberry wine and waxberry sparkling water to increase the fruit's added value and extend the industry chain.
