Workers shape port's global legacy

A special event was held at the China Port Museum in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, on Oct 19, celebrating the inspiring journeys of three key port workers who have been instrumental in Ningbo Zhoushan Port's transformation from a large port to a globally recognized leader.

The event traced the port's history back to 1984, when Ningbo Port welcomed its first container ship, marking the start of containerized transportation in Zhejiang. From those early days of manual unloading to today's record-breaking efficiency, the port has seen tremendous growth.

Feng Junzhang, a young controller at the port, recounted the port's 40-year journey from humble beginnings to its current status as a world-class facility.

"The establishment of Baosteel in Shanghai in 1978 created the need for a nearby deep-water terminal, and Ningbo Zhoushan Port was chosen to fulfill that role," he said, "Since 2002, the port has undergone significant integration reforms, further enhancing its capabilities."

Li Li, a remote-controlled gantry crane operator, shared her personal journey from struggling with the initial challenges of operating the crane to becoming a national champion.

"I remember when I first started, I struggled with the controls and the precision required," she said, "But with time and practice, I became more confident and eventually won the national championship."　　

Wu Qifei, a former crane operator and now a tech champion, provided a vivid account of the port's milestones.

"I remember the historic moments when our container throughput surpassed 10 million, 20 million, and eventually 30 million TEUs. It was a thrilling time to be at the port," said Wu.

Wu and his team have played a crucial role in training the next generation of remote-controlled crane operators, ensuring the port's continued success.

Professor Yang Zhongzhen from Ningbo University noted that the stories were not just about individual achievements but also about the collective struggle and dedication of Ningbo Zhoushan Port workers who have created a powerful port that continues to grow and innovate, setting new benchmarks in the global shipping industry.
