The Guyuan Museum of Ningxia is located in the south area of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, and is affiliated to the region's Department of Culture and Tourism. Its construction began in 1983 and was completed on September 25, 1988. The museum covers an area of 24,000 square meters. The display building is simulated Tang Dynasty (618-907) architecture, and covers 3,900 square meters. The building was renovated in 2014 and reopened in October 2016.
In 1997, the museum was named a National Demonstration Base for Patriotism Education by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China. In 2008 it was ranked as a national first-class museum and in 2009 it was selected as a national 4A tourist attraction.
Guyuan Museum is a comprehensive facility with historical relics including collections of bronze wares from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (770-221BC) and cultural relics from the ancient Silk Road of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581) and the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907).
The museum has collected nearly 20,000 cultural relics, of which three are national treasures, 123 are national first grade cultural relics, 2,008 are second grade cultural relics and 3,816 are third grade cultural relics. Some of the collections from Central Asia and West Asia form a physical basis of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.
