Elion Resources Group operates a solar power plant in the desert in Ordos, around which a 5,000-meterwide greenbelt has been added to prevent sandstorms. Drought-enduring foliage was planted between and below the panels to feed sheep and poultry.

Coal producers are also required to build warehouses so the coal is not stored in the open air, and open cast coal mines have to build windbreak fences to reduce dust pollution.

Ordos’ total installed power generating capacity of renewable energy has reached 1.12 million kilowatts, including 300,000 kW wind power and 790,000 kW solar power.

Local authorities have also promoted the production of natural gas, shale gas and coal steam gas in recent years.

The city's natural gas reserves reached 4.95 trillion cubic meters by the end of July. In 2016, the natural gas output of Ordos was 29.9 billion cubic meters.

Coal liquefaction and coal gasification technologies have also been adopted by local businesses to support local economic transformation.
