Ordos honors role models on national technology workers day

The city of Ordos honored a group of top technology workers at the plenary conference of the Ordos Association for Science and Technology, on National Science and Technology Workers Day on May 30. 

Ten workers, recognized as role models for their commitment to scientific research, were given awards at the conference, and another 40 workers were honored for their valuable contribution to promoting science to the public. 

Yu Xinfang, deputy Party secretary of Ordos, attended the conference and extended his congratulations on the winners’ achievements. 

Following the awards ceremony, a representative of the Ordos Association for Science and Technology delivered a report on the association’s work as well as on the city’s current general situation in scientific research. 

Jiri Mutu was elected chairman of the fourth committee of the Ordos Association for Science and Technology. 

Key areas of progress celebrated at the conference included that:

1. Ordos now has 16 regional-level academician workstations.

2. The Ordos Association for Science and Technology has to date organized 21 lectures, forums and academic conferences, involving 2,230 people.

3. A voluntary service group consisting of 64 leading technology workers was formed to promote science and technology among citizens.

4. The Ordos Association for Science and Technology gave its support to technology workers, for them to receive training.

5. Ordos has established 36 technology museums, 11 science labs for teenagers, 86 science demonstration bases in rural areas, 52 public bookstores, and 40 stations providing technical service for farmers.

6. Ordos has to date held 192 training programs for 31,000 farmers; the city has staged 38 activities to promote science, benefiting 130,000 locals; the city has organized six technology competitions for teenagers.

The National Science and Technology Workers Day was proposed by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology and was approved by the State Council in December 2016.

Starting in 2017, every May 30 is celebrated as National Science and Technology Workers Day, marking the contribution of technology to China’s scientific development.
