Despite pandemic, Ordos economy rebounds in 2020

The economy in Ordos city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region rebounded in 2020 despite the lingering impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Last year, Ordos achieved a regional GDP of 353.37 billion yuan ($53.01 billion), a year-on-year decrease of 2.9 percent.

The primary industry's added value was 13.57 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.1 percent, driving the growth of regional GDP by 0.1 percentage points. 

The added value of the secondary industry was 200.55 billion yuan, down 6.0 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the tertiary industry's added value was 139.25 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.3 percent, which drove the growth of regional GDP by 0.5 percentage points.

The proportion of Ordos’ primary, secondary and tertiary industries was adjusted from 3.5:58.0:38.5 in 2019 to 3.8:56.8:39.4 in 2020.

In 2020, the number of industrial enterprises above designated size in Ordos city reached 459, and the added value of industries above designated size dropped by 6.0 percent year-on-year. 

Among the nine banners and districts in Ordos city, Otog Banner, Otog Front Banner and Uxin Banner achieved positive growth in the added value of industries above designated size.

The growth rates of the city’s main industrial sectors have also maintained an upward trajectory. 

Among them, the production and supply of electric power and heat, petroleum processing and coking, non-metallic mineral products, metallurgy, automobile manufacturing, equipment manufacturing and pharmaceutical manufacturing have achieved positive growth. 

The city's fixed-asset investment increased by 6.0 percent year-on-year throughout the year, and the growth rate ranked fourth among all the leagues and cities across the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. The city's fixed-asset investment growth was 3.1 percentage points higher than the national level and 7.5 percentage points higher than the autonomous region.

From January to December, the total investment among citizens increased by 3.8 percent year-on-year, rising 25.6 percentage points from the first half of the year. 

Private investment in certain areas has also skyrocketed. The growth rate of investment in scientific research, technical services and geological prospecting increased by 1,306 percent year-on-year, investment in healthcare and social work increased by 96.9 percent year-on-year, and private investment in transportation, storage and postal services increased by 84.7 percent year-on-year.
