The first batch of 44 households in Amen Qirige village in Hanggin Banner got access to natural gas on May 26 – an important step in the implementation of the Gasification Ordos project.

The Gasification Ordos project is being implemented by the Ordos State-owned Assets Investment Group and aims to improve people's livelihoods, and advance rural revitalization and industrial structure adjustment.

The project uses the natural gas liquefaction cooling technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to recover the air exhaust gas from the liquefied edge-gas wells and transport the gas into villages through pipelines. The aim is to realize the effective use of the edge gas wells and avoid environmental pollution.

According to 76-year-old villager Gao Erxiong, the annual cost of burning coal was more than 1,000 yuan ($150.04), but now it only costs around 200 yuan per year to use natural gas.

"It's much cheaper and more environmentally friendly," said Gao.

"Residents of the 217 households in and neighboring Amen Qirige village will enjoy a convenient supply of natural gas," according to Chen Zifeng, deputy general manager of the Ordos State-owned Assets Investment Group.

Chen added that Ordos will finally be fully covered by natural gas.

On the same day, an activity took place in Amen Qirige village to promote the Olympic Games and the environmental protection measures associated with hosting the Games.
