Photovoltaic power generation is becoming a new economic growth force for the solar power-rich areas administered by the city of Ordos – located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
Midiliang village, in the city's Otog Banner, is a typical example of this growing use of solar power.
The village attracts a surfeit of sunlight and the average amount of daily light there can reach more than 10 hours.
Currently, a solar power generation project covering 210 mu (14 hectares), is under rapid construction in the village.
The project will have a total installed capacity of 5,000 kilowatts when completed and a designed operating life of 25 years.
It started construction in June 2021 and received a total investment of 25 million yuan ($3.75 million).
When in full operation, it is estimated it will generate power of about 8.5 million kWh annually and achieve an annual revenue of 2.5 million yuan.
"Starting from 2021, the photovoltaic project will pay a fixed dividend of 200,000 yuan per year to the village for 25 consecutive years," according to He Wentao, secretary of the Midiliang Party committee.
"The project's land lease fee is 200 yuan per mu per year and the total compensation for the 210 mu of land was 42,000 yuan," He added.
The use of clean solar energy will not only brings more income to the villagers, but is also expected to play an essential role in the area’s green economic development.
