Innovation drives Ordos' transformative development

Over the past 10 years, the city of Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has implemented an innovation-driven development strategy, and significant progress has been made in the city's transformation and development.
Statistics from the city show that, in 2021, the research and development expenses of enterprises above designated size in Ordos reached 5.87 billion yuan ($880.72 million), the number of national high-tech enterprises stood at 170, and the operating income of high-tech enterprises above designated size hit 182.69 billion yuan.
Meanwhile, the world's first zero-carbon industrial park was officially established in the city's Mengsu Economic Development Zone.
Ordos has been approved to build a national sustainable development agenda innovation demonstration zone, and was included for the first time in the national top 100 cities in terms of technological innovation.
Moreover, the city's energy processing and conversion efficiency of industrial enterprises above designated size increased from 65.8 percent in 2012 to 69.9 percent in 2021, and the on-site conversion rate of coal stood at 21 percent.
In 2021, the city produced 26.01 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a year-on-year increase of 3.1 percent.
By the end of 2021, the city's installed power capacity was 29.45 million kilowatts, and the installed capacity of new energy and renewable energy reached 4.14 million kW.
Photovoltaic power generation installed capacity was 2.87 million kW, wind power installed capacity was 445,000 kW, hydropower installed capacity was 760,000 kW, and biomass installed capacity was 60,000 kW.
Additionally, from 2012 to 2021, Ordos made strong efforts to promote the development of an export-oriented economy, and formed a new foreign trade model in which, automobiles, cashmere and related products, electronic products and chemical products were the city's main exports, and machinery and equipment and raw wool were the main imports.
In 2017, the Ordos Comprehensive Bonded Zone was approved and established, and cross-border e-commerce trade has grown since then.
Its total imports and exports increased from $420 million in 2012 to $1.38 billion in 2021.
