Jin Zhijun, a deputy to the National People's Congress and the dean of the Energy Research Institute at Peking University, made a motion to scientifically balance the relationship between carbon reduction and development, further improve the efficiency of coal utilization, and ensure national energy security.
Since Ordos and Peking University signed a cooperation agreement on Sept 30, 2022, Jin has recruited a team of more than 30 people to work in Ordos.
This year, Jin's team plans to carry out three key tasks in response to local conditions.
He said that one is to turn the Ordos airport into a zero-carbon airport; another is to build smart mines and reduce carbon dioxide emissions as much as possible through efficient coal mining; and the last is to develop stable energy storage technology in Ordos.
"My team will do our best to serve as technical consultants and provide technical solutions for enterprises," Jin said.
When talking about the reasoning behind his decision to work in Ordos, Jin explained that the city's plentiful energy resources had attracted him.
Ordos has huge reserves of coal and natural gas, as well as abundant solar and wind resources, which is of great significance to the study of the transition from fossil energy to clean energy.
"Ordos is an ideal place for learning and solving practical problems related to production," he said.
