Ordos aims for green transformation in modern coal chemical industry

In recent years, the city of Ordos has leveraged its coal resource advantages and implemented directives to enhance clean and efficient coal utilization. This has fostered the high-end, diversified and low-carbon development of the coal chemical industry.

According to the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), modern coal chemical production capacity in the city is expected to exceed 30 million metric tons and surpass 50 million tons by the end of 2030.

This plan seeks to create a global-scale modern coal chemical industry with the most comprehensive categories, longest industrial chain, and most complete system.

The efforts that have been made throughout recent years have already paid off. The coal industry chain in Ordos continues to extend and fill gaps in the "upgrade process" towards greening coal-fired power generation. It is now scaling up coal-to-gas conversion, while also modernizing coal-to-oil production.

High-end products like coal-based olefins, new materials, and fine chemicals are being successively launched.

In 2023, Ordos achieved a processing and conversion efficiency of 68.1 percent in industrial energy above a designated size. Of which, the coal conversion rate has reached 20.6 percent locally.
