The large-scale CO2-to-aromatics industrial pilot project by Inner Mongolia Jiutai Xinyuan New Materials Co, an enterprise in Ordos, is making significant strides.

"This project, jointly funded by Inner Mongolia Juungar State-owned Assets Investment Group and Inner Mongolia Jiutai Group, began construction in June 2022," said Tang Zhongbao, vice general manager of the Ordos company.

"The civil engineering phase is nearly complete, and we are about to enter the installation phase," Tang added.

With a total investment of 275 million yuan ($37.67 million), the project is expected to generate annual sales revenue of 100 million yuan upon completion. It will significantly reduce China's dependence on imported aromatics, extend the coal chemical industrial chain, and promote the transition to high-end, diversified, and low-carbon energy chemical production, achieving green and low-carbon development.

Tang explained that producing one ton of aromatics can consume three tons of CO2, thereby achieving industrial carbon reduction and carbon sequestration while producing high-end chemicals.

The completion and operation of this project will have significant strategic implications for the development of the national coal chemical industry. It will also provide robust scientific and technological support for the green transformation of the coal chemical sector.
