In recent days, passersby near Ordos Square in Dongsheng district, Ordos, have discovered delightful "tree hollow paintings" featuring cats, dogs, and other animals peeking out from tree trunks.
The artworks are created by local resident Wang Jiazhuo, who transforms natural hollows on old trees into lively street art. A painting graduate now working in children's art education, Wang was inspired after seeing similar works online.
Armed with brushes and paint, he began in mid-August by protecting the hollows with lime, sketching, and adding color. His first piece – a pair of seagulls – took four hours and quickly drew attention from curious pedestrians snapping photos.
Wang has since painted many more pieces inspired by local culture and nature, turning ordinary tree trunks into miniature open-air galleries. For him, while museum art may be polished masterpieces, these "tree hollow paintings" are vivid snapshots of everyday life.
