Qingdao sees 6.2% GDP growth in H1

The gross domestic product (GDP) of the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province totaled 750.87 billion yuan ($104.7 billion) in the first half of 2023, up 6.2 percent year-on-year, according to official sources.

Specifically, the primary industry's added value rose 4 percent to 23.26 billion yuan in the January to June period of this year. Secondary industry surged 5.3 percent to 245.86 billion yuan during the same period, and tertiary industry increased by 6.7 percent to 481.75 billion yuan, according to the Qingdao municipal statistics bureau.

In the first half of the year, the added value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fisheries in the city amounted to 24.03 billion yuan, an increase of 4.3 percent year-on-year.

The city's industrial added value of designated size enterprises -- those with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or above -- expanded by 5.4 percent year-on-year.

The added value of the city's service industry increased by 6.7 percent year-on-year, with the added value of accommodation and catering, wholesale and retail, and the financial industry increasing by 13.9 percent, 9.7 percent and 8.8 percent respectively.

From January to June, the city's air passenger throughput hit 9.53million, an increase of 123.3 percent. Railway passenger traffic totaled 14.02 million, up 168.1 percent, and the volume figure of waterway passengers was 1.17 million, up 365.5 percent. The total business volume of postal services reached 5.22 billion yuan, an increase of 18.1 percent, signifying a strong recovery of the industry.

Fixed-asset investment across the city surged 4.2 percent year-on-year in the first six months.

In the first half of 2023, Qingdao saw its consumption rebound rapidly as the city's total retail sales of consumer goods increased by 8 percent to 277.07 billion yuan.

Over this period, the city's foreign trade recorded 430.51 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2 percent.

A total of 182,000 new urban jobs were created during this period in Qingdao, fulfilling 52.1 percent of the annual target.
