Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), Shanxi province has actively engaged in the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, completing afforestation over 18.46 million mu (1.23 million hectares) and achieving greening in 19 counties along the Yellow River.

In 2024, Shanxi completed its desertification control tasks ahead of schedule, with 3.19 million mu of afforestation, 1.72 million mu of forest tending, and 163 million voluntary and roadside trees planted. Additionally, 700,000 mu of grassland were restored, setting a national example for integrated grass seed industry development.

This year, Shanxi will continue to adhere to the integrated protection and systematic management of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts. The province aims to shift from focusing on scale and speed to a balanced approach emphasizing quantity, quality, and efficiency.

High standards will be maintained to complete the afforestation of 2.6 million mu, coordinating various national and provincial land greening projects. Focusing on subalpine meadows, Shanxi will advance grassland ecological restoration and improvement and artificial grass planting projects to improve 700,000 mu.

Shanxi will also introduce a provincial plan to develop the under-forest economy, promoting under-forest planting, breeding, forest landscape utilization, and collection and processing. This aims to increase the under-forest economy's operational area by more than 100,000 mu.
