The National New Year Climbing Fitness Conference, Shanxi province's main event, and Yangquan's citywide hiking activity commenced on Jan 1 at the Shanxi Yangquan Cadre Academy.
Over 3,000 fitness enthusiasts from Yangquan city, North China's Shanxi province, joined running teams from 11 cities across the province to celebrate the New Year with an invigorating mountain hike.
The tradition of New Year climbing reflects the Chinese cultural aspiration for health and prosperity. This event – the first national fitness gathering of the year – featured participants ascending Shinao Mountain, with the starting signal marked by the release of white doves, symbolizing hope and blessings.

Midway stops served as rest areas and festive hubs, offering participants lottery-style "red envelopes", spaces to write wishes on "blessing plaques" and fun photo opportunities.
The buoyant atmosphere embodied the spirit of new beginnings and well-wishing for the year ahead.
This year marks the 29th edition of the event, which has been organized by the General Administration of Sport of China since 1996. It aims to inspire fitness and optimism.
Yangquan's successful launch of the event has set the tone for a year filled with health and positivity across Shanxi province.
