"I'm thrilled to be here picking organic strawberries and tomatoes and visiting the aquaponics farm. It's a novel experience for us seniors," said 73-year-old Zhang as she and her friends enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere at a wellness complex in Yangquan, Shanxi province.

This wellness complex is a cornerstone of Yangquan's efforts to develop its "silver economy". By revitalizing idle land and homesteads in nearby villages, the complex has become a comprehensive wellness hub featuring cultural exhibits, leisure farms, learning programs, wellness retreats, and senior living accommodations.

"We've transitioned from a passive model of 'a bed and three meals' to an active lifestyle where seniors can enjoy rural life together," said Liang Kai, the project manager. "With five greenhouses, a reception center, a cultural activity center, and a wellness restaurant already completed, and senior apartments ready for occupancy, the complex offers not just living spaces but a spiritual haven for the elderly."

Yangquan has crafted a multi-level senior care system that seamlessly integrates home-based, community, institutional, and medical care. The urban district currently hosts six senior care institutions, five senior service stations, 11 community dining halls, and 13 rural daycare centers.

A smart initiative has been launched as well, utilizing internet and smart technology to create a four-tier service network. This network combines neighborhood assistance, hierarchical teams, smart terminals, and incentive mechanisms to deliver personalized and precise services.

In addition, Yangquan has established an experience room showcasing senior-friendly modifications. Some elderly care stations offer health lectures, free medical check-ups, and cultural activities in tea rooms, libraries, and yoga studios to enrich the lives of the elderly.
