In 1043, Emperor Renzong (1022-63) of the Song Dynasty issued an imperial decree mandating the annual planting of trees suitable for the soil from Jianmen Pass to the Yizhou region.

This decree marked the first and only time in recorded Chinese history that an emperor ordered the planting of trees. It also marked the beginning of cypress tree planting in what is now Guangyuan city, Sichuan province. Ever since, the local population have been keenly aware of the need for tree conservation efforts.

The ancient cypresses, planted in 1043, are now nearly 1,000-years-old and are revered as "Song cypresses" or "imperial cypresses."

To many tourists, the towering Song cypresses evoke poignant "farewell scenes," symbolizing bonds of friendship and the homesickness of countless travelers over the centuries.

In addition, the lush greenery stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of generations of tree protectors, celebrating their brave and kind hearts and their unwavering commitment to ecological development.
