Founded in 1979 and benefited from China’s reform and open-up policy, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences has developed into a comprehensive research institution focusing on applied agricultural research on various subjects. Over forty years, scientists and scholars in the school have dedicated to agricultural development and combination of local situation and the strength of the institution.

The predecessor of Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences can be traced back to the Open Source Cultivation Company which was founded in Chadian in 1920. After being renamed several times, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences was officially founded in 1979 on the basis of three research institutes, including the Municipal Rice Institute, the Vegetable Institute and the Alkali Treatment Institute. 

Over the past 40 years, in accordance with the demands of the agriculture and rural development in Tianjin and the modern agriculture, the Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences has consecutively established 15 research institutes (centers) such as crops, vegetables, cucumbers, etc.. There are 545 employees, of whom 259 hold senior professional titles and 78 employees with doctoral degrees. So far, there are 118 people in the whole Academy who won the title of experts at different levels which includes one Academician of the Chinese Engineering Academy, two national candidates of the 100 million talents project, 65 experts enjoyed a special grant from the government, one extraordinary talent of Tianjin, 11 experts conferred the title by Tianjin, 10 experts with outstanding contributions, two extraordinary talents of agricultural research of the agricultural and rural department, two extraordinary young agricultural scientists of the Agriculture and Rural Department, 22 people of the first level in Tianjin "131 talent training project," one high-level innovative science and technology leading talent in Tianjin Haihe Talent Plan, and two young and middle-aged  innovative science and technology leading talents.

 At present, there are 4 national research and promotion centers such as national agricultural products preservation technology research center, etc., one key laboratory of national vegetable germplasm innovation of the national enterprises, eight ministerial and municipal key laboratories and test stations such as agricultural products preservation of the Ministry of Agriculture, etc., and 10 municipal research (engineering) centers such as the Tianjin vegetable breeding technical engineering center, etc..

Aiming to meet the demands of the national and regional agricultural development, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences takes its social responsibilities and focuses on independent innovation. In recent years, in accordance with the characteristics of small-scale agriculture in the metropolis of Tianjin, it continuously optimizes the layout and research direction of the subject which is tightly connected to the demands of science and technology, production and market, and takes crop breeding as the research focus. It also has gradually established the leading position and advanced level in China in the fields of cucumber, cauliflower, cabbage, hybrid japonica rice breeding etc. Its technical advantages are obvious. Meanwhile, it explores and innovates in many new fields, such as the preservation and processing, safe production and quality safety of the agricultural products, the healthy breeding of livestock and poultry, the utilization of agricultural resources and environmental protection, etc., which has made great achievements.

From its founding till 2018, the Academy has undertaken nearly 1,800 national, provincial and ministerial projects and completed more than 1,300 registered achievements. The Academy won 452 awards at or above the provincial level, including 16 national awards and 49 provincial and ministerial first prizes.

During the 12th “Five-Year Plan”, Tianjin Academy of agricultural sciences started the construction of ‘one district with two bases’, and built nearly 30,000 square meters of scientific research core area, 3,500 acres of scientific and technological innovation base, more than 200,000 square meters of experimental facilities, 30,000 square meters of pilot-scale workshop and more than 20,000 square meters of experimental office buildings. At present, the layout of "one district with two bases" (innovation core area, modern agricultural science and technology innovation base, modern animal husbandry science and technology innovation base) of Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences has been basically formed.

The Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences has always considered serving the "Three Rural Issues" in Tianjin as its own responsibility, constantly improving the service system of science and technology, innovating the service ways of science and technology, while simultaneously upgrading the level of service in the industry, the publications of our talented researchers are always about the vast fields.

In recent years, through implementing the promotion project and the institutes (enterprise) cooperation, establishing the science and technology demonstration center, sending the scientific research talents to practice in the district and county, and the enterprise, organizing the science and technology service expert team with 100 people. Especially since the issue of the 12th Five-Year Plan, the academy actively undertook the tasks of the municipal scientific and technical special commissioners, technical assistance and cooperation between the western and eastern, and counterpart assistance, it is nearly 100 experts are selected in each year to provide scientific and technical support for the industry development of the difficult villages. At the same time, it selects many experts to carry out the work of assisting Tibet, Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai and counterpart assistance of Chengde, promotes the industry transformation and upgrading and assists the task of poverty alleviation.

Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences bends its efforts for international communication and cooperation and has actively implemented The Belt and Road Initiative of China, promoted the agricultural science and technology to “going out”, and enhanced international competitiveness. The improved vegetable varieties have been established in 4 foreign experimental demonstration sites in India, Pakistan, Bengal and other countries. The seeds of the cauliflower and seeded watermelon have achieved export. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, it introduced more than 70 foreign expert projects and more than 100 foreign experts; dispatched more than 100 training personnel to abroad, and established the long-term cooperation with many famous scientific research and educational institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China Agricultural University, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Forestry, etc.. Focusing on the coordinated development strategy of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, it strengthened the collaborative innovation of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei agricultural science and technology, established the platform of communication and cooperation at home and abroad, and promoted the innovation of regional agricultural science and technology and the development of modern agriculture.

Today, Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences is standing at the new historical starting point in new era. It never stops moving, encouraging and diligence, deepen the reformation, fighting and innovation, continuously provides strong scientific and technological support for the development of modern urban agriculture and the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy of Tianjin, makes greater contribution to speed up the development progress of China from a large agricultural country to a powerful agricultural country, strives to create the brilliant achievements which is worthy of the new era, and composes a new chapter of the development of Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
