Founded in November 1951, the Tibet University (西藏大学)is on the list of national "211 Project" of key construction universities. In June 2013, the university was included in the National Midwest Higher Education Revitalization Program. In July 2013, it became a doctor's degree-conferring institution, and in September 2017, it was on the list of the first-class discipline cluster construction universities. In February 2018, the school became the co-constructed university by the Ministry of Education and the Tibet Autonomous Region People's Government.
Covering an area of approximately 1.18 million square meters, the school has four campuses with 15 colleges, namely, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Medicine, College of Art, School of Economics and Management, College of Tourism and Foreign Languages, College of Political Science and Law, College of Education, College of Finance and Economics, School of information Science and Technology, School of Marxism Studies, National Open University Tibet Department, College of Continuing Education and International College.
To date, the school has once won the second prize of national teaching achievement, and 15 autonomous region teaching achievement awards. In 2014, it was conferred by the Ministry of Education as the "advanced unit in implementing the 2012-2014 National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Plan". In 2017, it was selected as being a part of the first batch of innovation and entrepreneurship education demonstration universities in China.
