Tibet ecological environment remains stable in 2022

Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region released its latest report on the region's ecological environment on June 5. The report showed that Tibet remained one of the best regions in the world in regard to its ecological environment quality in 2022.

In 2022, the water quality of major rivers and lakes in Tibet remained good on the whole, meeting corresponding national environmental quality standards.

During the period, the overall air quality in the Qomolangma (known as Mount Everest in the West) region was graded as Class I, China's highest level according to the national standards. Meanwhile, Lhasa, the regional capital, ranked first among China's 168 major cities in terms of days with good air quality.

Soil quality across the whole region remained at a safe level. Lhasa, Shigatse, Shannan, Nyingchi, Qamdo, and Nagqu have carried out acoustic environment quality monitoring, and the overall acoustic environment quality remained stable.

In 2022, the overall radiation environment quality in the region was good. The air absorbed γ radiation dose rate at nine automatic monitoring stations was within the fluctuation range of natural baseline value. The monitored values of total α and total β in the water were lower than those stated in the Hygienic Standards for Drinking Water. Concentrations of uranium, thorium, and radium in river water and groundwater have also been maintained within the fluctuation range of natural baseline value, and those of potassium-40, uranium-238, thorium-232, radium-226, and cesium-137 in the soil were within the fluctuation range as well. The monitored value of electromagnetic radiation did not exceed the limit specified in the "Electromagnetic Environment Control Limits".
