In the spring and fall, migrating white cranes settle in Huanzidong National Wetland Park in Faku county, administered by Shenyang city, in Northeast China's Liaoning province.
The wetland park, which covers some 2,800 hectares, is one of the main stopover points for the migration of white cranes, with the number of white cranes that migrate to the park every year accounting for about 70 percent of the world's total during the peak period.
In recent years, Faku county has provided a great environment for wild birds by returning farmlands to wetlands.
To speed up the restoration of the wetlands, Faku has planted 95,000 willows, over 9.3 ha of Scirpus nipponicus -- food for the white cranes -- and 12 ha of aquatic reeds in the Huanzidong National Wetland Park. This has effectively improved the surrounding environment and the ecological efficiency of the wetland park.
Facilities such as wetland science museums, bird watching platforms, and wetland wildlife corridors have also been built in the park to promote the public protection of wetlands and white cranes.
The increase of the wetland area and the improvement of its environment has caused the number of wild animals and plants to grow year by year.
Currently, Huanzidong National Wetland Park is home to 144 kinds of birds, including 139 migratory birds -- and over 60,000 wild birds have been observed during the peak period.
