China Unicom plans to deploy edge cloud nodes globally starting in 2021, gradually realizing the cloud capability of each POP node and empowering digital transformation. The same year, probe systems were designed to be deployed at CUII nodes worldwide for network quality monitoring. By integrating edge cloud capabilities and CUII probe functions, we provide end-to-end value-added services and empower the development of the digital economy.

Global layout, enabling resource efficiency improvement

The edge cloud project was initially deployed in 15 countries or regions including Taipei, China; Karachi, Pakistan; Bangkok, Thailand; Manila Philippines; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Tokyo, Japan; Frankfurt, Germany; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Jakarta, Indonesia; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Hanoi, Vietnam; Seoul, South Korea; Yangon, Myanmar; and Johannesburg, South Africa. Also, the cloud resources of the nodes in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York, Singapore, and London are transformed and optimized to unify the technical architecture of edge cloud on a global scale and achieve integrated scheduling of network architecture. Technology stack, management and operation, and resource efficiency improvement to achieve optimal TCO.

Real-time monitoring, empowering user perception

CUII probe system provides value-added services based on all-IP, end-to-end, actual and simulated access, and user-perception evaluation services, and it supports single-page webpage monitoring, DNS monitoring, PING monitoring, Trace monitoring, WEB full-page browsing monitoring, and video service monitoring. It utilizes the edge cloud capability to deploy monitoring points worldwide to monitor user experience metrics such as network quality, website performance, and availability. Also, users can accurately grasp the operational status of the website through powerful reports and professional consulting services.

Given the capabilities of the edge cloud base and its interconnection with the Internet and CUII network (AS9929), it naturally has the conditions for deploying the probe function. After the CUII probe system was deployed, all indicators and parameters were consistent with the planning scheme.

Reduce costs and increase efficiency, enabling digital transformation

Based on edge cloud capabilities, probe application deployment has been completed in nine nodes: Manila in the Philippines, Seoul in South Korea, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Tokyo in Japan, Taipei in China, Hanoi in Vietnam, Yangon in Myanmar, and Jakarta in Indonesia Other nodes are being deployed one after another. At present, more than 300 nodes around the world have been connected to provide global monitoring services. The successful deployment of the probe system on the edge cloud has brought profound reference and reference significance to the later deployment of other applications. It is currently planned to continue to deploy the looking glass system and other internal and external applications with the remaining resources on the edge cloud, effectively avoiding the waste of deploying a set of resources for a single application and maximizing resource reuse; it has also been unified at the management and operation levels.

China Unicom will continue to evolve in the direction of digital transformation, empower the company's business growth and development, and enhance customer perception.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
