Leading World Internet Conference (WIC) member Wendy Hall has delivered a video speech on the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to contribute to scientific research and discovery at the Symposium on AI for Science (AI4S) organized by the WIC Specialized Committee on AI (WIC SC on AI) in Beijing on Feb 19.
Hall, chair of the WIC SC on AI and fellow of the Royal Society, noted that AI4S presents an exciting prospect for scientific research and discovery, and related topics are repeatedly discussed at major global conferences, underscoring the need for such event on AI4S in the current international landscape.
Hall highlighted that AI and science have been key talking points at major international forums such as the royal institution in London and the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in France. At the latter event, participants explored how AI can drive scientific breakthroughs and contribute to sustainable scientific development.
"It is so ironic," Hall said, on one hand, we discuss the sustainability of AI, yet on the other, AI consumes vast amounts of energy, impacting the planet. A global platform for discussions on this issue is needed, she noted.
The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
